 iPhone 4 Consumer Reports, the popular publication which reviews and rates consumer products has said that it would not be recommending consumers to purchase iPhone 4. Apple has announced that it will be ending its scheme of giving a free case to consumers purchasing the iPhone 4 that resolved the antennae reception issue on September 30, 2010. Consumers had complained that touching the external antennae embedded in the steel band that encircles the case in iPhone 4 led to loss of signal and dropped calls. After this issue was highlighted by several media publications, Apple announced that it will be giving a free case to the consumers buying the iPhone 4 that mitigates the issue.  iPhone 4 Case After the launch of iPhone 4 in June, there were immediate consumer complaints that touching the external antennae embedded in the steel band that encircles the case led to loss of signal and dropped calls. Apple hurriedly organized a press conference on July 14, where Steve Jobs did not directly acknowledge a hardware issue with the position of the antennae, but instead offered users a free $29 worth Bumper case which mitigated the issue.  T-mobile G2 T-mobile has announced a new Android based smartphone called G2. This smartphone has an 800 MHz Snapdragon MSM7230 micro-processor. The G2 has been specifically designed to work on T-mobile’s new HSPA+ network which enables internet connectivity at 4G speeds. The HSPS+ network covers 100 million Americans in more than 55 metropolitan areas across the U.S. The phone has a 3.7 inch screen with a unique hinge design that opens to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. It is built on Andorid 2.2 and has seven customizable home screen panels, including one which is dedicated to Google applications including the Android marketplace. The phone comes with a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus. It can also record high definition (720p) videos which can be uploaded directly to your Photobucket account.  BT Fon application for iPhone and Andorid British Telecom has announced a new BT FON application for iPhone and Android smartphones in the U.K. The application will automatically connect customers to its network of 1.6 million Wi-Fi hotspots. It will give BT Total Broadband customers free and unlimited Wi-Fi access, and comes with a weekly updated map of hotspots to help customers find their nearest hotspot. Once BT customers have downloaded the app, they can input their BT Internet email username and password, and choose to be automatically logged in whenever they are in a BT Wi-Fi area.  Nike has launched a Nike+ application with GPS functionality. This application helps you to keep track of your running. It records your pace, distance, and run route using the iPhone’s GPS and accelerometer technology. You can use a Challenge Me feature in the application to push farther, faster, or longer than your last run. Fun motivational messages from Nike’s top athletes appear to celebrate your victory, if you beat your last run.  University of Virginia iPhone Application After the corporations jumped into the iPhone application bandwagon, it is now the turn of the universities. University of Virginia has launched a free iPhone application. The application offers 22 different sub-applications for prospective students, students, alumni, faculty, staff and Cavalier sports fans. Users can check the admissions timetable, search for books in the library, look up President Sullivan’s office phone and e-mail address, read about University traditions and play the “Good Ol’ Song.” They can track athletic contests in progress and look up the bios of the players and coaches; read the latest news from UVA Today, the Cavalier Daily and the U.Va. Magazine; make an appointment in the Health System; and check whether there are any available seats in Larry Sabato’s politics courses. There are sub-apps for special events like Homecomings Weekend and Final Exercises. One special feature (available only on GPS-enabled iPhones) allows users strolling on the Grounds to point their phones at a building and find out its name and brief description. WillowTree Apps Inc. of Charlottesville, handled the design and build-out of the application and they had nicknamed it “The Good Old App.”

 Twitter for Smartphones The number of twitter users using it on their mobile phones has seen a meteoric rise by 62% since mid-April this year. The number of new users starting on Twitter on mobile has increased to 16% compared to 5% before. The business managers at Twitter have been following a strategy to increase its use on mobile. Earlier there were a lot of third party applications for using Twitter on iPhone, but there was no application specifically from Twitter. The Twitter management decided to acquire an iPhone application called Tweetie and turned it into the official Twitter application for iPhone, with a new sign-up interface. Microsoft’s internal engineering team has finished its work on Windows Phone 7 and it has now been released to manufacturing.  Energizer Wireless Induction Charger Energizer has announced a wireless inductive charger for charging iPhone and Blackberry smartphone devices. This charger will allow consumers to charge their smartphones, MP3 players, cameras, and any device which is 5 watts or less wirelessly on a single charging station regardless of the manufacturer. It is based on a new universal standard for inductive charging called Qi. Devices with a Qi-enabled accessory or with Qi built directly into it can charge on any Qi inductive charging pad. Inductive charging happens when two devices—one designed to send power and the other designed to receive it—touch one another and energy is transferred between them.
