An application called iStethoscope, developed by Peter Bentley of University College of London, converts an iPhone into a stethoscope. To use the application, the iPhone is placed close to the chest, so that it’s built-in microphone can record the heartbeats. The application is an audio amplifier that records sounds through the built-in microphone, amplifies it, filters it in real time and records it. Microsoft has launched a Bing search application for Android smartphones, but only for those who are using the Verizon wireless network. The application can be downloaded from the Verizon Wireless Android phones Marketplace. It features Bing image of the day with clickable hotspots that can be used to explore and discover related trivia on the place/object featured in the image. The image of the day changes every day and you can swipe through the last seven days of images. Dell has launched a new smartphone called Aero based on the Android platform. It has a 624MHz Marvell processor, 3.5” screen, 5MP camera with 8X zoom, built-in GPS, and comes with a removable 2GB MicroSD card. It can accept up to a 32GB MicroSD card. This smartphone has a replaceable battery which can be switched easily. Netflix has launched a free application for the iPhone. This application allows Netflix members to stream selected movies or episodes to their iPhone and watch them instantly for no additional cost. The monthly plans for Netflix start at $8.99 a month and allow unlimited viewing of the videos available for streaming. The streamed movies or episodes can be watched using Wi-Fi or the 3G network. The episodes and movies are organized into a variety of categories based on members personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members’ individual instant Queues. StumbleUpon, the Web service which lets users rate and review the Web sites that they visit and recommends new Web sites to visit, has now launched an application for the iPhone and Android. The application comes with an embedded browser and a bar on the top which has the like, dislike, and stumble upon buttons. Users can press the thumbs up icon to show their liking, the thumbs down button to show their disliking, and the stumble upon icon to go to a recommended Web site. Google has added new features in the 1.1 version of its Google Earth application for Android. The application now lets you explore beneath the ocean surface. Google has added push notification in its Google Mobile application for iPhone. Once you have linked your Google account to the application by signing into your account in the application, an icon badge will appear to show that you received a new e-mail in Gmail, and the Google event reminders will appear on the home screen of your iPhone. Apple is shutting down Quattro wireless, the mobile ad network it purchased in January this year for $275 million, to focus exclusively on its iAd platform. While the Quattro wireless mobile ad network was cross-platform and supported mobile operating systems other than those from Apple, the iAd platform will only work on the iPhone and iPad devices. Facebook has added a new feature to its iPhone application called Places. It allows you to tell on your Facebook page where you are, and the friends you are with in real time. There is a Check-In button in the interface and you can tap that to share your location with your friends to tell them where you are. You can also easily see if any of your friends have also chosen to check in nearby. To use this feature, you will need to have the most recent version of the Facebook application for the iPhone. You also can access Places from touch.facebook.com if your mobile browser supports HTML 5 and geolocation. To use this feature, you go to Places on the iPhone application or touch.facebook.com site and then tap the “Check In” button.
